EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
London-based electro-pop investigators Is Tropical put out their new EP 'Flags' this week on trendy French boutique label Kitsune. It contains four tracks each featuring a different collaboration, including with DRUGZNDREAMZ and Owen Pratt, but here we'll focus on two songs: the first being 'Venezuela' which features Get People, and the second being 'Oi Peru' which has been produced by VISIONS. 'Venezuela' is certainly the softer of the two although it's still cutting electronica at the base of those fluttering melodic touches and radio-ready beats. It's this song that's likely to receive the most attention from the media, and rightly so. Not only is it an easier listen, it's also exotic and sparkling; something to brighten up the mood. This EP was released on "blue Monday" after all.
Continuing the South-American fascination is 'Oi Peru', but quite why they're shouting at them isn't made clear. Lulling you into a false sense of security with music box piano as an intro, it soon become smothered in layers of screeching scree that sound like a demonic electronic machine possessing the song. The breaks in this manifestation being a stark contrast; delicate and ambient, before the noise comes again, piercing the peace with its harsh, contorted scream. The simplest way to describe it would be a regular piece of chill-out music well and truly buggered right up, and we mean that in the best possible way. Both songs are good but they both serve different purposes. If you're still suffering from "blue Monday" then you can either sooth the stress away with 'Venezuela' or let the anger out by cranking up 'Oi Peru' to eardrum-bursting levels.
