Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Iceland's not all Bjork, Sigur Ros and sulphurous hot water springs, you know. Underground music sensations Hjaltalin have quietly been making a name for themselves back home, and maybe with the release of their third album, confusingly titled 'Enter 4', in March, we can at least hope that they begin to start turning heads a little further afield. Kicking off the album's campaign in the UK is new single 'Myself' with its accompanying video full of tapestry, jigsaws, model birds and nice knitwear with a strange homoerotic undertone. We'll leave the film buffs amongst you to figure it all out. It's music wot we do.
Happily the odd and often sad video end on a light note, due to someone losing a tooth. Hmm. So the song then, well that's less confusing but no less intriguing. Hjaltalin tackle alternative pop, embracing electronic beats and the atmosphere that can be created by some neatly placed piano chords. It's verging on trip-hop, there's a slight dubby feel to it, but essentially this is alt-pop that is neither uplifting or overly emotional, sitting in a confused area somewhere in the middle. Happily it seems perfectly at home there in its own world, minding its own business and bringing pleasure to any ears that should happen to pass it by.
