Oracle O. - Voodoo Walk

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Being a bit of a global affair as it is, it seems fitting that Oracle O. have signed to a label outside their base country. Guitarist Mauricio Santana is from Chile and singer Madeleïne Katë McGowan is part Irish and part Danish. It's Copenhagen that they call home and will soon be releasing their album 'Cracking The Eyes' (set for April) on Norwegian label Fuzz Club Records. Does such an international make-up translate into international sounding music? Well not necessarily, but you's struggle to get away with describing their sound as run-of -the-mill. There may be little Chilean or traditional Irish or Danish music incorporated into new single 'Voodoo Walk', and it's certainly not made of traditional building blocks.

A very modern sounding track, 'Voodoo Walk' is tribal beats, a sinister feeling and, for want of a better description, rather like psychedelia being made by trip-hop artists. It is a moving song and one that is full of energy despite being only slightly above mid-pace. It's more the force and passion of the vocals and the crisp, angry determination of the music that give this song its guts. The video only serves to help the cause further. Produced by filmmaker Eva Mulvad, the visuals show a war-torn and barren country with troops being dispatched and what appears to be an arranged marriage taking place amongst the rubble and poverty stricken land. Disturbing visuals for a stirring track.
