Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
With a well received debut album out of the way and picking up support from some very handy outlets when it comes to new band promotion (Radio 1, NME, Rolling Stone, etc.) the foundations for Brighton's Cave Painting have been well and truly laid. It's not by luck either, the sound and style of the band was enough to get them signed to Third Rock Records (which was set up by the former Managing Director of Parlophone, a man with a handy book of contacts and the knowhow to get bands places) and produced by Barny Barnicott, a man who knows how to turn an indie band into chart stars. Look at Arctic Monkeys or Kasabian for proof of that.
All of which begs the question; where next for Cave Painting? The groundwork is substantial, now they need to focus on a bit more promotion, get that name more widely known, and then batten down the hatches for a few months and return with that killer second album. Easy, eh? We all know it's the second album that can make or break a band, but we'll put no further pressure on them as attention still needs to be on the debut, especially new single 'Leaf'. It is, as you'd expect, a very good song and very well produced, maintaining that alternative slant while adding enough grandeur to make sure playlist compilers and magazine editors realise the crossover potential this lot have. It sounds like a band on the brink of a breakthrough and fingers crossed for them it will happen.
