City Reign - Making Plans

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

We've been following the progress of Manchester's City Reign (not sure I'm happy with that band name now actually, I'm a United fan, let's hope it's not football related) since back in 2011. Then they released an EP titled 'Numbers For Street Names' which included 'Making Plans' as its lead track. We praised them then for managing to swerve the arrogant, laddish swagger that is the default setting for many of that city's guitar bands, a tag they're gradually shaking off thanks to a great new wave of bands. We can now definitely add City Reign to that list. In the past couple of years or so they've improved in both sound and confidence.

The latest news is that their debut album 'Another Step' is set for release on February 25th, along with this new and improved version of 'Making Plans'. The band have retained just enough of the guts of Manchester's guitar heritage to give them an edge, but tampered it with a less self-conscious approach and some fine songs. Still the biggest comparison will be to Idlewild, but with that band now absent this could work in their favour, especially as they gradually seem to be sculpting a more distinctive sound of their own. On this single you can literally hear them growing in stature.
