I can only speak from a personal point of view, but if I had one iota of musical talent and decided to form a band I'd probably pick a slightly more inspiring name for it than Norma (and something that would be a little less ubiquitous when it comes to internet search engines). Still, I'm sure they have their reasons and to repeat what we say countless times, it's the music that counts. This Swedish group don't seem to have any problems in that department. Their debut EP garnered some great reviews and they're currently preparing for the release of new album 'The Invisible Mother' at the end of the month.
First single 'Joan' is a classy piece of modern, experimental pop music that takes influences from all over the place. There are both electronic sounds and organic ones, it's part trip-hop, part electronica and also has a strong east Asian feel to it. This genre-avoidance is welcome, but if you need a pigeonhole then think dreampop being strapped to the side of a futuristic ballistic missile. There's a repetitive beat and synth line running through the whole song, remaining there wherever the melody chooses to go. Somewhere Giorgio Moroder is sat proudly nodding in approval.
