The Vitamins - I've Got A Telephone

For their debut single, Bury St. Edmunds trio The Vitamins are offering up a double A-side of raw garage-rock excellence. The two tracks, 'Keys To The Limousine' and 'I've Got A Telephone', are both explosive numbers that bristle with energy. We're singling out 'I've Got A Telephone' as being the best of the two due to its chugging riff and primal rock 'n' roll styling.

The Sea & I - Improve

Talking of debuts, The Sea & I release their self-titled first EP this week, although all four members have done time in bands before, so it's not such a surprise that their sound comes well defined. Lead-track 'Improve' begins as something of a baroque-pop song before they add more layers and more voices and turn the song into an impressive cross-genre piece of majesty.

Clubfeet - Everything You Wanted

Following their debut album 'Gold On Gold', Clubfeet return with a new double A-side single, 'Everything You Wanted' and 'Heartbreak'. The Australian and South African collective give us two different examples of electro-pop done properly here, from the dancier 'Heartbreak' to the more fuzzy, electronica-style 'Everything You Wanted' which you can hear below.

Garrett Kato - Hipster Kids

Australian singer-songwriter Garrett Kato shuns the conventions of his genre by mixing in sounds from across the musical spectrum. New single 'Hipster Kids' has a laid-back '60s groove to it but sounds anything but dated. You could also bring in artists such as Beck as comparisons, but really with this experimenting Garrett Kato seems ready to forge his own identity.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Party House - Tonight

Party House may not be that well known yet, but they should be and hopefully will be before long. Their new single 'Tonight' is a modern form of shoegaze that feels very stately and towering but does so without histrionics of over-reliance on effects. It's simply the power of the song that lifts it. Some rich guitars, a steady beat, piano and a nice vocal all combine to become greater than the sum of their parts. It's a bit like a super-charged Mazzy Star who they also cover as one of the B-sides here, but their sound blended with the kind of power that Exitmusic have shown. 'Tonight' is a very strong song that just keeps getting better.
