Mikal Cronin - Weight

Ty Segall associate and similarly prolific artist (he's also in Okie Dokie, Epsilons, Party Fowl and Moonhearts) Mikal Cronin's new album 'MC II' hits the UK this week and when you're looking for uptempo and catchy guitar-pop to blow the cobwebs away then tracks like 'Weight' with it's bounding optimism and freshness will do just fine.

Pure X - Things In My Head

Texan experimenters Pure X release their album 'Crawling Up The Stairs' this week, accompanied by a US tour. Free download single 'Things In My Head' is a little bit spooky and sits somewhere between hazy desert-rock and the more electronic world of trip-hop, but it's a blend that works, resulting in this woozy, twilight-feeling track that doesn't have a hair out of place.

Dungeonesse - Nightlight

Dungeonesse is the result of a collaboration between producer John Ehrens and Jen Wasner of Wye Oak, and their self-titled debut is out this week. Part of the plan of the project was to explore different areas of music and try and embrace R&B and pop more than they had done in the past. This was clearly the thinking behind ace electro-pop number 'Nightlight'.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Swim Deep - She Changes The Weather

As you're probably aware, the current buzz city in the UK is Birmingham and the whole "B-Town" scene that the press have created. We all know there are good bands from everywhere, but the upshot of these media-manufactured scenes is that they shine a light on the genuine talent from a particular area. And Swim Deep definitely have talent, we spotted that right after we heard previous single 'The Sea', but with 'She Changes The Weather' they've gone one better. This dreamy shoegaze/indie track is a match for anything by their contemporaries Peace who are responsible for one of the albums of the year so far. On this form they've got stiff competition from these guys. A perfect summer tune.
