Out This Week - 27th May 2013

Crocodiles - Cockroach

It's always good to hear from San Diego's finest fuzz-merchants Crocodiles. Last week they announced that their fourth album 'Crimes Of Passion' will be released in August and they're giving us first single 'Cockroach' for free. In a (very) slight departure from their regular sound, they've ramped up the garage aspect and added some organ for extra psychedelic effect.

Azure Blue - Willows & Pines

We can't get enough of Swedish dreampop artist Azure Blue. It's as if he's taken the magical promise that The Sound Of Arrows failed to fulfill on their album and made it a reality. 'The Catcher In The Rye' was OROTW, as was 'The Road I Know'. This would be too, but then he'd be hogging the spotlight. 'Willows And Pines' is as amazing as the rest, we can't wait for the new album this summer.

Hookworms - Radio Tokyo

Being willfully independent is a brave (but in our opinion, sensible) thing to do for a band, and it hasn't seemed to hamper Hookworms in any way, their album 'Pearl Mystic' drew in plenty of plaudits, and today they release a limited edition single, the freakbeat of 'Radio Tokyo' which is part of the Too Pure Singles Club, so get in quick, it's limited to 750 copies.

CocoRosie - Gravedigress

The latest album from the CocoRosie duo is shaping up to be another corker. You can get recent single 'Gravedigress' for free and it's spooky, strange, ethereal and a bit magical all in one, spreading itself across pop, indie, trip-hop, folk and electronica. 'Tales Of A GrassWidow' will be the French pair's fifth studio album and is out this week.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

W.H.I.T.E. - I Wasn't Afraid

It won't take much brain power for you to work out that 'III' is the third album by Californian pop experimentalist W.H.I.T.E., the stage name of Cory Thomas Hanson. 'I wasn't Afraid' is the album's first single and is some splendid dreampop with a great big beat plonked on top; it's verging on being a baggy track which would tie in nicely with the revival both genres are currently seeing. Call it what you like though, this is a big tune and it's a very good tune. W.H.I.T.E is someone who's music we need to explore a little bit more.
