Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
It's been the best part of a year since we last featured Buckinghamshire four-piece As Elephants Are, and in that time it doesn't seem that there sound has altered much. Some may argue this is a bad thing and that bands should evolve, but if you've got a winning formula and you can keep writing songs of a high standard then why bother? 'War Cry' was a decent track, and new single 'Youth Blood' is too, even though they're hardly pushing any boundaries; this is more quirky indie in a similar vein to Bombay Bicycle Club and The Maccabees, with maybe a hint of Friendly Fires creeping in there too.
So, fair enough, we know what we're getting. 'Youth Blood' shouldn't be dismissed on these grounds, it's another well written song; the band seem to have an understanding with each other that means each instrumental track compliments the others. There's still an appetite for this kind of sound at the moment, especially as other bands move away or dissipate, so this could work to As Elephants Are's favour. It's not a big chart-smashing hit, but neither is it forgettable pap. We'd say the band are still on course and given the right time and the right song a breakthrough is within their grasp.
