Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Given that this song seems to be a relatively serious, arty, slightly math-rock track that sounds for all the world like it's the work of a band who take what they do seriously, it's refreshing to read that the first line on their website is "Mount Fabric are nothing to do with fabric, or how to mount it." Looks like they have a sense of humour after all. Formed in 2010, the Manchester band have a handful of singles and EPs available, the most recent of which is 'Heuristic Fits'. Feel free to call us thick, but we had to look "heuristic" up in the dictionary. It means "Enabling a person to discover or learn something for themselves." In which case there's a certain irony in us looking it up...
Anyway, there's a song we're meant to be talking about, and it's a very good one at that. Beginning with cascading guitars that are then taken over by some robust drumming and the kind of vocals you'd expect from a band who take themselves very seriously, it's actually lighter than it first appears. What Mount Fabric seem to want to do is to show that they are skilled musicians, but to do so without sounding like egotistical knobheads, and they manage it by keeping the song sharp and delivered with precision, but never allowing it to become indulgent. The sound is one that will be appreciated by the rock crowd and the indie kids alike. Are we being stupid by not quite getting what a "heuristic fit" is?
