James Skelly & The Intenders - You've Got It All

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Usually a recommendation by, support slot for or general praise from Paul Weller is a surefire sign that we're in for some boorish lad/dad-rock that's best left to people like Noel Gallahger and Jake Bugg to enjoy and the public to ignore. But the old geezer's rediscovered his mojo somewhat in the last few years, plus The Coral have always been a decent band. So there's no reason to suggest that their frontman's new project, James Skelly & The Intenders shouldn't be able to knock together a good tune with the Modfather on co-writing duties, and they duly deliver.

It was expected that sounds from the '60s would be involved here, given both men's love of that particular vintage, but we weren't quite expecting a Northern Soul stomper like this. It's pure mod heaven; snappy, to the point guitar-based music with oodles of piano and organ smothered over it, plus soulful backing vocals and a beat borrowed from the best that Motown and Stax had to offer. 'You've Got It All' is made up of spare parts but when these parts are assembled in this way all stereotyping has to be cast aside and this track recognised for being what it is, and that's a corking retro number by two great songwriters.
