Wildlife Control - Different

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

We weren't exactly blown away by last summer's self-titled album from Wildlife Control. It sounded like cheesy pap trying to disguise itself as alternative/indie music. The guys had some good songs, they had some bad songs, they didn't have much quality control and they seemed unable to make these recordings sound they way they were hoping. Our conclusion was "a less interesting version of The Beautiful South. And The Beautiful South were rubbish". Harsh? Maybe, but we always try to be honest and we always try to be fair, picking out the good and bad points. Unfortunately the bad outweighed the good.

Skip forward a few months and they send through new single 'Different'. Well, they can say that again. 'Different' by name, different by nature. They've hit that edgier sound they were fumbling around for and they've written a more interesting song to apply it to. This songs sparkles and shimmers and pounds all at the same time. It's dripping with the gold dust that was so disappointingly missing before, the use of echo in the mid section blows the song apart and shows they've learned more than one trick. The vocals are a perfect match too. We stand by our opinion of the album, but our opinion of the band has risen, along with the quality of their music, tenfold.
