Single review by Sean Lanister
There’s something inherently pleasant about the simple marriage between an acoustic guitar and a decent vocal. There’s an uncomplicated beauty to chords and melody, a combination that ultimately creates all of music. Almost every song you hear and love will at some stage have been bashed out on a guitar or piano, just a few notes and a bit of strumming, with the rest – the detail - built around it.
In the case of ‘Heart of Gold’ however, there is little detail. No nuances to set it too far apart from the mainstream, and nothing you haven’t heard before. Just a chord structure and a vocal, beefed up by good production and a rhythm section. That’s not to say it’s a bad song, it has the makings of a fantastic song if you take into account the catchy nature of the melodies, but in truth it just needs a little bit more to set it apart from other singers of the same type. It’s a good track, one that many will enjoy, but in the end it’s all a bit bland.
