Casimir - Not Mathematics EP

EP review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Y'know that excellent US duo Casimer & Casimir that we've featured several times in the past year? Great aren't they? Well Casimir are in no way connected to them. Not one little bit, they're not even in the same country, they're from Bristol. You do get bands with the same name springing up from time to time naturally. There are currently two bands called Peace doing the rounds. The mega-hyped Birmingham newcomers, and another band on the other side of the Atlantic, but two Casimirs? That isn't such a common word, so we were a bit surprised there were a pair of bands incorporating it. Anyway, enough of this riveting band name chat, let's have a listen to their music.

The 'Not Mathematics' EP is five tracks long and opener 'Balancing Act' does have waves of metallic dreampop which introduce the song and then lurk in the background throughout the raucous explosion in the middle. Musically the comparisons end there. Everything is cranked up on 'Lucid', the vocals are a desperate shriek and this time it's the guitars that are metallic and glistening. Possibly the best track is when they venture back towards dreampop on 'Whistles' with its pleading delivery, but that in turn gives way to a harsher, desperate chorus, showing both sides of the band off well before a frantic post-rock ending. More experimenting is allowed on final tracks 'Broken Minds Think Alike' and the towering 'Squeeze Right There' which show that this band have no intention of sticking to the rules.
