Coves - Last Desire

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

We all have a go a compiling lists of bands to look out for in the coming year. It's an annual (and frankly annoying and predictable) ritual that the music world goes through like clockwork. Here at The Sound Of Confusion we forgo bands who we think will have the most success in favour of those who we think will make the best records. We like to think that somewhere between us lies a modicum of taste. If you have a gander at our choices you'll find some fine acts to keep an eye out for. Whoever we pick there are always some that slip through the net. Listening back to Coves'Cast A Shadow' EP we're beginning to think we may have found our first major emission.

OK, judging a band off one EP isn't always the best measure of their future releases, but having just heard their new single 'Last Desire' it's looking like they may have a tank full of classy, psychedelic indie/electro numbers that will have us cursing not featuring them. 'Last Desire' is like a less contrived version of The Kills (i.e it's cool but it's not trying to be cool) and the trippy swirls float over a simple thudding beat and some neatly distorted bass guitar. We had Temples down for potential psychedelic album of 2013 contenders, and while we don't know Coves' release schedule, it looks like they could provide them with some stiff competition.
