There are, of course, two types of film soundtrack. Those that are a collection of previously recorded tracks chosen by the director to back certain scenes (see 'Pulp Fiction' or 'Trainspotting') and those that are original film scores. You could perhaps give Queen's 'Flash Gordon' as a well known example. Besides the famous title-track and the song 'Football Fight' the rest of that album is made up of incidental music and short ambient pieces. Quite literally sounds more than actual songs. The original film score can work wonders when used with the movie, but for listening pleasure alone the rewards are less satisfactory.

The official line on this album from reclusive German production duo We Are Are We runs something like this: an unnamed Hollywood director had been working on a major film and had a classical soundtrack already made. One night he heard We Are Are We's music thanks to his son, was immediately impressed and soon contacted them to record the music for the planned film. This they did, putting in 24-hour shifts to meet the deadline. Then, for apparent legal reasons the film was shelved, maybe to never see the light of day. All that remains for public consumption is the music, simply released as an album with the band's name on and no title.

These are eight instrumental pieces, and from the soft piano introduction of 'Frail', through that track's quivering, bass-heavy explosion at its mid-point, to the similarly evocative and gently swelling ending of 'Royalty', we're given access to an ambient world where classical music merges with modern electronic sounds. You won't find any pop songs here, there is no 'Flash', so these pieces will better meet the needs of people who favour atmospheric and intricate music, from post-rock to dreampop to classical; they explore them all, sometimes all at once. If this describes your taste then you'll love the likes of 'Rise' and 'Series'. As original film scores go, We Are Are We have provided their part of the deal to a high standard. As for the visuals, well I guess we'll have to wait and see if they ever surface.
