King Dude - I'm Cold

Single review by KevW

Seattle's premier "dark pagan-fuelled folk" troupe King Dude are heading out on a US tour, which begins tonight, in support of their album 'Burning Daylight' which gets its UK release via Van Records on November 12th. We're expecting plenty of sinister and haunted sounds in the vein of The Cramps by way of Nick Cave. To kick-off both tour and album they've released a brand new video for 'I'm Cold' which as expected has a disturbing undercurrent that matches their witching-hour sounds quite wonderfully. Halloween may have been a better launch night, although you get the impression they're not here for the novelty factor.

With religious imagery, Blair Witch Project style filming, animal skulls, murder by hammer, poisoned apples, blood and more besides, it would be easy to hit the point of overkill and fall into a horrible cliche. It's well directed though, and therefore saved from any misguided attempts at parody. Likewise the lyrics talk of the devil, hell and what seems to be a demonic kidnapping, all to a moody, noisy and shaking blues-rock-country track. It's brilliantly disturbing stuff and if you're planning on catching any of the gigs we suggest taking a crucifix, garlic and holy water, just as a precautionary measure.
