Single review by KevW
Sweden's Mackaper began life as an organ duo back in 2009, and it's not often we hear from organ duos. Having released a debut album, 'When All Is Sad And Dawn' (we're guessing a play on words with the phrase "when all is said and done", but don't quote us on that), in 2010, the band has since ballooned into a quintet playing entirely instrumental music. Still led by a twin organ front line, many more instruments ranging from brass to percussion can be heard from their new incarnation, and there will be plenty more strange sonic voyages to take when their second effort 'Mot Ljusare Tider' is released in December.
A quick go on a free translation website tells us that 'Mot Ljusare Tider' translates into English as 'Towards Brighter Times', and the first track to grace our ears from the record is 'Staden Vaknar' ('The City Wakes' is what the auto-translator says) and is not quite like anything else around at the moment. It's a very ambient song, but not in an abstract way; we're looking at a tune rather than some instrumental messing about although it has clear prog leanings. This could easily have beamed itself in from the early 70s and that's a compliment, not a criticism, as there's no flab or showmanship here, even though 'Staden Vaknar' is slightly jazzy, they manage to pull it off well. The album should make for an intriguing listen.
