Zôl - Souplesse et Occlusion Poétique 84

Single review by KevW

The delightfully named 'Fat Booby Bitch Vol. 1' is a compilation EP released earlier on this year and features a single track by five different artists who are experimenting with new electronic techniques and chopped-up beats. It's not going to be one for fans of convention or commercial music but it's certainly an interesting snapshot of what some of the continental innovators are getting up to and you're likely to hear some sounds that you haven't heard before. We're focusing on Zôl who contributes the track 'Souplesse et Occlusion Poétique 84' (no idea, try Google translate) and comes accompanied by a great video.

A collage of cut up and twisted sounds, 'Souplesse et Occlusion Poétique 84' is stark and cutting as a song, and it also has a forbidding atmosphere, like something from a futuristic sci-fi horror film. The French artist represents these bleak and icy sounds with chilling scenes of a villainous puppet-master controlling the movements of a sweet and unassuming target, scenes that could have come from a horror movie themselves. His fury gets the better of him and a chase ensues. It's unlikely to be everyone's cup of tea but as an audio/video experience it works wonderfully.
