We were talking about drummers turned frontmen not long ago (Ringo, Dave Grohl, Phil Collins etc.) and I guess we can add Bart Denaro to that list. Formerly found playing with sticks and skins behind Australian soul/rock group Kid Confucius, he's now to be found fronting Sydney powerpop group Briscoe who will be giving us their debut album 'Friends Ago' in just a few days time. In the lead-up to the release they've already unveiled a couple of singles from the record, both of which suggest it's definitely going to be worth some ear time. Mixing plenty of indie-rock with some tidy melodies and neat harmonies. They're the latest in a long long line of bands serving up similar platters of sound, but they do a grand job of it.
First single 'Animal' eases you in gently. With an acoustic beginning, it's not long before those melodies turn it into something from the top-drawer. Recalling dozens of other bands including The Beatles, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub and even Supergrass' mellower tracks. It combines 70s pop sounds such as ELO with the early 90s collage-rock scene and it's hardly surprising it picked up some momentum upon release. The second taster of the album is the awesome 'B.O.T.S.' which hurtles headlong into energetic powerpop territory, again with similar influences but with a more direct attack, heading straight for the jugular, but choosing to tickle it rather than grab it threateningly. It's likely that fans of guitar-pop everywhere will find rewards here.
