Kodaline - The Answer

Single review by KevW

Now we know from their debut EP that Dublin folk Kodaline know their way around a rousing indie-rock track or two. They've been picked up by some big names in the radio world and also tickled the fancy of many of us bloggers. Not heard them yet? May we suggest the utterly superb 'Lose Your Mind' as a starting point (although others may pick 'All I Want', both will impress). For their next trick, and to capitalise on the not inconsiderable hype that's been building up around the band, (and let's be clear, they do have all the right ingredients to become a huge success), they've announced a new EP 'The High Hopes' (a fitting title) which is scheduled for a March release.

Our first sample from said EP comes in the form of new single 'The Answer'. As we've said, these guys can write a decent tune, no problem, and 'The Answer' certainly can be labelled as such. On a mild note of disappointment, they've chosen here to opt for the tried and tested gradually-building indie-rock anthem, stirring steadily and increasing in potency until it hits suitable heights. It's a tried and tested (and in accomplished hands like these) a pretty fail-safe path to take. Maybe we were hoping they'd take a bit more of a risk? They have the capability to do so. But still, 'The Answer' is rousing and it does its job mightily. We can't complain too much, they may have taken a formula, but they've carried it out almost perfectly.
