Single review by KevW
Over the years Heavenly Recordings have brought us many alternative music icons, including Manic Street Preachers, Saint Etienne and Doves, so it's fair to say they haven't particularly adopted a specific style of music to promote, other than acts that are generally considered to be "alternative". This year though, their focus seems to have switched to more psychedelic sounds, bringing us the acclaimed album by TOY, as well as the debut single by hotly-tipped (well, by us at least) Temples, and now psych/shoegazers Charlie Boyer And The Voyeurs who have been getting themselves noticed by ably providing support to TOY on a recent tour.
Having Edwin Collins produce your debut single doesn't only add some indie cred, it also means you're likely to get the very best out of your tunes, and that can certainly be said for 'I Watch You' which takes us on a hallucinatory trip from krautish beginnings, through a reasonably conventional structure (but not sound) and then jacks it all in for an exploratory journey through some acid-fried, space-travelling guitar, only adding to their credentials as the potential next big psych explosion. They don't fob us off with a throwaway B-side either, 'Be Nice' is a cracking mid-60s styled beat group number that makes purchase of both tracks extremely advisable.
