Single review by KevW
As Red Rack'em, German-based producer Danny Berman became know for cross-pollinating retro electronic genres such as hip-hop, soul, house and techno, and his new project Hot Coins is a continuation of his fixation with dance sounds from the past, this time focusing on the mergers and changes that took place at the end of the 1970s and early 1980s, as post-punk, disco and the burgeoning electronica and hip-hop scenes began opening doors and setting down the blueprint for much of the popular music that has developed since. Hot Coins' debut album 'The Damage Is Done' is set to be released in January, preceded by new single 'Geek Emotions'.
The lead track does indeed pick sounds from that era, particularly the primitive electro sounds and sophisticated disco stylings, yet there's a modern twist to the music too. As much as it borrows from the past, it could never quite be mistaken as an original, with Berman adding his own personality and musical experience to the track. For what is purely and simply a dance track, 'Geek Emotions' is surprisingly downbeat and doesn't pick on the major chart hits for guidance. B-side 'Freestyle Lover' also delves back in time, but here the modern slant is even more prominent, taking in sampling and production sounds that have come to the fore in the past couple of decades as much as the bygone era of 'Geek Emotions'. It's definitely a worthwhile reevaluation, as Hot Coins has shunned straight imitation to include his own identity. Until the original is released on Monday, check out the Jacob Korn Remix.
