The Beautiful Game - From Angels To Ememies

Single review by KevW

For future reference, a press release boasting about playing festivals alongside Republica, Toploader and Reef is unlikely to do your cause any favours. Particularly among the more snobby corners of the music press (which of course doesn't include us, right? Well maybe just a little...) They've also opened for The Bluetones and the Bluetones were great, so it's not all bad. Formed in Camden in 2008, The Beautiful Game have a name that suggests a band of lads making tradition British indie-rock and this is exactly what they do, citing the usual crowd of major indie stars of the past couple of decades (Oasis, The Libertines, The Stone Roses etc.) as their inspiration.

New single 'From Angels To Enemies' would probably be best described as lad-rock, again something that will be off-putting to some, especially given the disastrous recent attempt at a revival by Viva Brother, although this single is a cut above that annoying bunch and despite its overly traditional sound it's a decent, chest-beating indie anthem-in-waiting for those more concerned with music that contains passion than with skinny jeans and a trendy haircut. The Beautiful Game are certainly not fashionable and they're not trying to be, which I guess makes them outsiders. They're making tunes that represent their tastes and tunes that they believe in; something that's worth a lot more than getting a glowing review in Artrocker.

'From Angels To Enemies' is set for release in January but you can hear much more music on their SoundCloud page.
