The Bloogs - Freezing Rain

Single review by KevW

We nearly hit the delete button before even giving the song a listen. "The track evokes The Police..." runs the press release. Much to our relief, it doesn't sound much like Sting and his muso cronies after all, instead evoking mid to late 60s beat groups who dabbled in slightly psychedelic sounds. New single 'Freezing Rain' isn't a psych track by any means, but it does hark back to the spirit of that era, as well as the revival and reworking of similar sounds that took place in the late 80s and early 90s. Essentially London-based The Bloogs are makers of decent indie-type guitar pop, something there's no shortage off, but there's enough here to warrant your attention.

For starters there's the video in which copious amounts of paint powder (or coloured flour maybe) are hurled over various band members, coating them in some kind of hallucinatory fog. Quite what the long term damage this will have done to their respiratory systems or potential allergies we don't know. But it's rock and roll, so we shouldn't care, right? 'Freezing Rain' is a thoroughly enjoyable piece of guitar-pop that follows in the grand tradition of British bands like The Kinks, The Las, The Coral and many more besides. There's probably not enough here to propel them to superstardom in the current climate, but lovers of decent tunes made in the time-honoured way should cast their eyes and ears over this one.
