Android Orchestra - Falling

Single review by KevW

Much has been made of Denmark's fruitful noise-rock and punk scenes of late, with even the likes of NME picking up on several bands from the country. But since when has one country been all about a single scene? The UK is also a small country in size but is home to an wildly diverse and eclectic musical landscape, so there's no reason why other countries shouldn't be the same. The problem lies in getting these sounds to our ears and not leaving them to just brighten up the place of their birth. Shunning the harsh guitar sounds that our press have been hyping are Copenhagen's experimental pop quartet Android Orchestra, a band whose music is the very antithesis of the guitar-wrangling noise-monkeys some would have us believe rule the airwaves there.

Having recently released their debut album 'Are We Looking At The Same Stars', the band have chosen 'Falling' as their new single and the video for the track is made up from a collage of fan-recorded footage of a live performance at Copenhagen's Rust venue. There's a soulful side to their sound and a definite pop edge which lends itself well to potential chart success (which they may well have enjoyed back home for all we know) but there's also experimental leanings to what they do. Android Orchestra have taken modern pop and injected it with some identity, seemingly dismissing the interchangeable nature of many modern pop stars (look at the whole Sugababes scenario for example). This is done simply by being a performing band as opposed to a collective of studio boffins. Niki & The Dove Fans could well get taken in by the tribal rhythms and willingness to look outside the box for ideas.
