Divine Fits - Would That Not Be Nice

Single review by KevW

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed a huge rise in side-projects, collaborations and supergroups these past few years? Maybe it's the ease of communication and travel that has led to more inter-band breeding than ever before. One group is no longer enough, the modern musician is expected to take part in a veritable orgy of music making with those they meet on tour, through shared studios or just by a chance meeting while watching a gig. They're all at it, and Divine Fits are no different. Consisting of Britt Daniel (Spoon), Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade) and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks) and with the production assistance of Nick Launay (Grinderman, Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), the gang put out their 'A Thing Called Divine Fits' album in September.

Just time for one more single before the Christmas rush begins then, so here we have 'Would That Not Be Nice' (sounds like something a US Graham Taylor might say) and like many supergroups the song doesn't quite add up to the sum of its parts. It's a reasonable alt-rock track with dark undertones that would get your ears twitching a little more if it was the announcement of a new band on the scene, but from seasoned pros like this it all comes across as rather subdued. You don't want to deride it particularly because it's a very decent tune, but in such capable hands maybe we could have expected something a bit more special. But of course they're saving all their best songs for their main bands...
