The fin. Night Time

Article by KevW

Japanese quartet The fin. are well regarded and formed at around the peak of the chillwave movement a few years ago. They've drawn comparisons to some of the major proponents of that genre, including Washed Out and Toro Y Moi, but also the more upfront dreampop of bands such as Beach House and Mew. With a new EP released at the start of the month, the group clearly display a sound that blends both forms of music but is also a shimmering pop song at heart, making it widely accessible rather than the property of any niche scenes. Titled 'Night Time', the title-track is a great display of this complete sound.

Apparently written during long, unlit walks home at night (hence the name), 'Night Time' is paradoxically bright for a song written about darkness and the thought processes it brings, and this is in no small part down to some sparkling guitar, a summery melody and light, soft synths. It's more suited to the beach than lonely roads. Lyrically it tells a different story, although this manages to fit the music perfectly, so no contradictions are found. 'Night Time' is an easy listen and a perfect choice for a single, sounding not unlike something to come from the Scandinavian indiepop scene. The fin. are well worth investigating if you haven't done so already.
