Jemima Surrender - Hammer and Peg

Article by KevW

What's with the sudden influx of bands who have names suggesting they're solo artists? Actually, even though two thirds of Bristol trio Jemima Surrender are male, they describe themselves as "girl music", and the strong vocal of Millie Phipps is very much a focal point of their sound. Plus, the new video for single 'Hammer and Peg' features only her (unless you count a cat and a goat...), so the guys seem content to linger in the background (those of you over 30 might remember the term "Sleeper blokes"...). Jemima Surrender's album 'The Uninhabited World' was released in November, and this track acts as a great advertisement for it.

The song itself sounds like a modern update on a few bands that were around at the same time as the aforementioned Sleeper, recalling some of the 4AD acts like The Breeders and Throwing Muses, as well as British acts such as Salad, although it's less frayed around the edges than that might suggest. Perhaps early PJ Harvey would be a good comparison. There's a post-grunge element going on with the guitars, but overall this is a little more streamlined and is up there with some of the finest modern alt-rock bands in that respect, and at under three-minutes long, it flies by and leaves you wanting more, and that's always the sign of a good song.
