Get Me Free #137: Universal Thee - Hounds

Article by KevW

The first couple of months of the year are always exciting times for new music, as smaller and newer bands look to leave their mark with new material and touring ahead of the summer's festival season, avoiding both the Christmas rush from major artists and mid summer when music fans are spending more cash on partying in the sun. There are loads of records we're looking forward to on the horizon, and the new one from Edinburgh's Universal Thee is one of them. Four of the group met at Dundee University, forming afterwards and adding fifth member Matt Grieve to complete the line up.

With one album under their belts, Universal Thee have looked to expand and build on their sound for 'All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace' which is due on February 19th. 'Hounds' does suggest a progression, with a bigger and more melodic sound that's still scuzzy and not over-produced. Reminiscent of a few of the more tuneful acts to come out of the US post-grunge scene, and combining that sound with more conventional powerpop, 'Hounds' makes for a great single that deserves a good amount of play on alternative radio stations, as well as your iPod/phone/stereo/whatever you play your tunes on.
