"The soundtrack for a coming apocalyptic nuclear disaster" might not be the most festive of themes, but given the precarious state of world politics it's perhaps rather timely. We're crossing our fingers and toes that nothing like that happens, but such concepts can pave the way for some ace music. Swedish group The Litsos might not be as dark and doom-laden as, say, BYSTS, but there is a shadowy side to current single 'Vultures' (something its very title might suggest), and it's a new-wave song that could be straight out of the genre's golden era in the early '80s.
With a dash of goth and post-punk, the synths and Tove Sandström's excellent vocal nicely offset the foreboding and urgent bassline and slightly angular guitar riff. You can detect the influence Siouxsie and the Banshees here, and that's probably not something that The Litsos would mind, as they seem to be coming from a similar place, but adding a tempo shift to make this more modern and energetic. With any luck, nuclear disaster is something none of us will live to see, but if the worst comes to the worst, we might as well go out to a good soundtrack.
