Get Me Free #107: Benjamin Esterlis - Another Ocean

Article by KevW

Described somewhat surreally as being "a weird little classic pop song that can only be heard in a busted-up radio station outside the FM scale, a one-hit wonder from another dimension", this single from Israeli artist Benjamin Esterlis comes with a video that sees him bedecked in the attire of an '80s wedding singer just to further add to the effect. From the description and the video, you'd be forgiven for thinking there was something a little novelty or tongue-in-cheek about 'Another Ocean', but in reality that's not the case at all.

Taken from his new solo album 'The Blue Bay', this is quite a modern, slightly lo-fi indie/pop song with otherworldly effects that plucks bits from lounge music, creepy film soundtracks and modern dreampop and finishes up sounding quite cosmic, especially when we hit the guitar solos. Esterlis is known for his production work as well as his musical partnership with Shany Kedar, and this experience shows. 'Another Ocean' even contains elements of early Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, which is never a bad thing. An unusual song in many respects, yes, but a very very good one too.
