Why has there never been a band of note called The Felines before? (Maybe there has, but not that we can recall anyway). It seems such an obviously great name for an all-girl band, particularly one with guitars, attitude and natural cool, three attributes that this Danish trio have in abundance. They've got the tunes to back it up too, with four crackers making up this menacing, prowling debut 7" single. Lead track 'Daddy Walk' is classy and classic garage-rock; snappy, brash, untamed and brazen. It's joined on the A-side by the surfy psychobilly of 'The Sneak', a feral instrumental where The Cramps meet The Raveonettes for a Halloween party.
The pair of tracks on the flip-side aren't just here to make up the numbers. 'Boots' is a rumbling and punky take on the Bo Diddley beat that's bawled out with confidence and panache. They close their first offering with the sharp, crude trash of 'Black Joe', a song that, like the other tracks, borrows from the past heavily but is made in The Felines' own way. Despite the minimal production and raw energy it sounds fresh and up-to-date. Really it's a shame there are only four songs here, when you get to the end it's hard to resist going back to the beginning and playing these tunes again. These girls are cool cats indeed.
