Dumb - Retina

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Thankfully people have stopped banging on about Birmingham so much now (yes, I realise I'm doing the very same here) as while it can draw attention to the bands from that area, the end result can be detrimental; the victim of the music press' traditional build 'em up and knock 'em down culture. Dumb are from that city, but it's unlikely that they'll get lumped in with the whole "B-town" scene that NME insist on pursuing, as their style of punky rock doesn't fit that of the now quite well known scene champions.

As far as we can tell, 'Retina' will be the band's first official single, with a free demo download also available via their website. So in not fitting that particular scene, where do they fit? The answer is that they probably don't. There have been bands mixing alt-rock and punk doing the rounds for years and the only time it approached any kind of "scene" was over a decade ago. So that's the gauntlet thrown down to Dumb then: They have a good song in 'Retina', follow it up with more and open the door for other similar bands to follow in their footsteps. Easy, right guys?
