Wolf People - All Returns

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

It's a very English brand of psychedelia that Wolf People create. Maybe this is in part due to recording their new album 'Fain' (out April 29th) in a remote location in the Yorkshire Dales and soaking up some of local environment. New single 'All Returns' absorbs much music from Britain's past, not least the layer of traditional folk that lies hidden beneath this song, you'd probably need a sonar scanner to pick it out it out in its entirety. There's also the unmistakable outline of prog appearing from time to time, like a ghostly apparition from the past. Really the simplest way to stick a tag on this song to go plain and simple: psychedelia.

'All Returns' carries all the idiosyncrasies of the weird and wonderful artists of this country's past: The Incredible String band; Soft Machine; Syd Barrett; Fort Lauderdale; even The Coral when they were starting out. They make this sound their own though and are not frightened to use lead guitar throughout, something that has remained deeply uncool for some time but carries the song here. Whether they fit in with the current crop of UK psych bands (The Horrors, TOY, Temples) we'll find out when the album arrives. If they continue to forge ahead down this particular route instead, well we'll be more than happy with that.
