Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
Going by the video, Brighton's Rubylux spend as much time on their hair as their music. Still, nothing wrong with a bit of personal grooming, not everyone wants to look like Worzel Gummidge like me. 'The World Goes Quiet' is the band's new single, out on May 16th, shortly to be followed by an album of the same name. After a small-scale debut album, the band attracted enough attention to secure gigs in an impressive list of countries including the US, Australia, Germany and Vietnam (I wonder how many bands can say that?). You expect that such perfectly turned-out gentlemen would be purveyors of the finest commercial rock to go with it.
Well, you'd just about be right. Their second album will doubtless be given some extra polishing, and the band aren't afraid to list bands such as The Killers alongside trendier picks like Jimi Hendrix. So we can assume their goal is decent rock music with just enough grit to keep them alternative and just enough commercial appeal to give them a fighting chance of climbing up a few rungs on the fame ladder. And that's just about what 'The World Goes Quiet' is. It's got plenty of radio potential, a video that will suit the music TV channels and just enough edge to prevent them becoming the teenyboppers rock band of choice. We'd have to say that things are looking up for them.
