Whether you call them a side-project, an offshoot or a whole other band is up to you, but Denmark experimentalists Vår (formerly known as War) share members with current noise-punk faves Iceage who have got the press whipped up into a frenzy in the past year or so (not sure what the fuss is about personally). So it's more than likely that when Vår drop their debut album in May it will get similar treatment, only this time it might just be more deserving, as the clips we've heard from 'No One Dances Like My Brothers' have been innovative and unique.
Take current single 'The World Fell' as an example. There's all kinds of stuff going on here, from a simple pounding beat to krautrock electronics, layers of scree, distorted guitars (possibly) and a few other bits and bobs that we can't be 100% sure of the identity of. Now this kind of approach is all very well, but if the song's naff then it's a waste of brain power splicing all these unusual components together. No such problems here. This ain't a pop song, this is more than a little avante-garde but in all the right ways. It's as if the darkest sides of synth-pop had never happened before, so someone had to invent them and this was the result. Much like last year was Tame Impala vs Pond, 2013 could be Iceage vs Vår.
