China Rats - Nip It In The Bud

Leeds quartet China Rats have only been going for two years but already have some tales to tell. Last year they impressed so much at a gig in Spain that the organiser of Benicassim asked them to step in for Bat For Lashes at the last minute. They've been invited back this year. Top quality garage-punk tunes like 'Nip It In The Bud' show exactly why they went down so well.

Junip - Your Life, Your Call

As we've said before, when Swedish musician Jose Gonzalez gets together with his band Junip the results exceed his solo work. Their new eponymous album is out this week and those three musicians working together pee from a great height over just about any other acoustic guitar-based band out there. Here's the very fine 'Your Life, Your Call'.

No Joy - Lunar Phobia

This lot have been getting talked about a fair bit lately, especially in shoegaze circles. Montreal's No Joy do have that kind of sound but they combine it with pop sensibilities so it's not just fans of noisy guitars that will appreciate their woozy sound. 'Lunar Phobia' is taken from their highly anticipated album 'Wait To Pleasure' which is out this week.

Sweet Baboo - Let's Go Swimming Wild

If you're looking for some relaxing sounds for lazy days that don't include either the words "chill" or "wave" then this new single from Sweet Baboo could just do the trick with its laid-back beats, soulful vibes and sporadic brass sections. The man behind the name, and presumably the make-up, is North Wales songwriter who releases his first album 'Ships' very soon.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK
The Postelles - Pretend It's Love (feat. Alex Winston)
It's still a source of bewilderment that US indie/alt-rock types The Postelles aren't much bigger than they are. They've been recipients of the OROTW title in the past, as has the excellent Alex Winston who is slowly becoming omnipresent whilst remaining not a particularly big hitter chart-wise, but her day will come. For The Postelles new album '...And It Shook Me' contains this little gem of a tune, 'Pretend It's Love' that should be a huge success but will most probably remain on the fringes where both artists currently lie. But then it's those areas where all the best tunes are anyway, isn't it.
