Sam Thomas - I'm Gonna Be A Witch

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

As debut singles go, this is one of the best we've heard in a while, and it could well be down the eclectic musical journey that Sam Thomas' life has taken him on. He's the son of an opera singer, so opera and classical music were both parts of his childhood, but like most people, when he hit his teens things changed and he explored the world of rock experimentalists such as Pink Floyd and My Bloody Valentine. The resulting music he makes does maybe take in elements of the above, but rather than direct influence, they seem to have helped him carve out a niche of his own.

With the sample of a young child telling of how he wants to be a witch and shoot people, this begins to a delicate piano and guitar that are more in line with dreampop/folk. This song steadily builds as electric guitars begin a steady ascent until they're driving the song, being joined by drums to give an expansive rock sound that's anything but conventional. It's almost unthinkable that someone can do anything truly new with guitar music anymore, as 60 or 70 years of it has exhausted so many possibilities. But we've never heard anything quite like this before. A wonderful introduction.
