Strangers - Something New

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

It's been quite a ride for London's Strangers who are still at an early point in their career, with 'Something New' being billed as their debut single. It's not the first music they've made available though, with three EPs released last year that managed to pick up some decent radio play and land them support slots with current alt-pop darlings Niki & The Dove and Grimes. These aren't the only famous names they've been involved with, and both tracks on this single feature guest vocals from Crystal Fighters' Eleanor Fletcher. Also 'Something New' was produced by Dimitri Tikivoi whose credits include Little Boots, Goldfrapp, The Horrors and more.

Being well connected should certainly open a few doors, but whether they remain open is ultimately down to picking up a fanbase, and that, while helped by having such useful outlets for spreading the word, will depend on their music being much cop and finding favour with the public. Strangers bill themselves as dark synth-pop, although we'd argue that this particular song is fairly light and this could work in their favour. Being a mid-tempo track, it needs a pop edge to give them a chance of becoming as well known as their associates. 'Something New' is, above all else, a pop song, so hopefully there will be no problems for them there. It's a good track too, but we'll be interested to hear how the potentially darker non-single material turns out.
