Aufgang - Kyrié

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Pan-European trio Aufgang have just released their second album, the follow-up to their 2010 eponymous debut, on the legendary Warp Records imprint. In recent years we've seen Warp diversifying slightly from the general brain-meltingly confusing techno experimentation that they made their name with, and perhaps Aufgang are part of this. The album, 'Istiklaiya', handpicks elements from all over the shop and pieces them together to form original music, but that's not to say their music is made up of samples or is any kind of patchwork, more that they're capable of fusing different genres together to fit their own agenda. The album's first single 'Kyrié' is a great example of this.

Even the single edit takes about a minute before anything, barring some incredibly quiet piano, particularly noteworthy happens, but when it does it's a collision of past and present. Imagine if glam-rock had never existed; instead it was developed recently, but not by guitar bands like you'd expect. Instead it was developed by techno boffins as a new form of experimental dance music. That's about the size of things when it comes to this track. In part it does sound like some of the electronic pioneers of the '70s who were, by proxy, influenced by glam, but after a minute or so of reasonably routine but highly enjoyable stomping, they change tack and let fly with some more modern electronic sounds and piano that's best described as buggered-up. We finish with some angelic voices and a quaking glam explosion. You didn't get that with Alvin Stardust.
