Myles Manley & The Little People - Easter Morning

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Dublin-based Myles Manley describes himself as "a popstar", and I guess to a certain extent he is, but not in the way that Rihanna or Bruno Mars are. This, naturally, is a very good thing. With his band, The Little People he's made an album full of songs we've not quite heard the like of before. Vocally he's very distinctive; it's as if someone tried to do an impression of Antony Hegarty and got it horribly, horribly wrong, but did it perfectly in tune and in turn sculpted their own vocal niche. Musically the songs fit somewhere between pop, rock, indie, baroque, folk... in fact most styles that could be considered "popular music", with the exception of metal or hip-hop, although you wouldn't bet against then trying their hands at either of these in the future.

Single 'Easter Morning' has a suitably unorthodox video, where iconic religious paintings are recreated using real people who eventually come to life. It's really quite humorous, if a little screwed up, so in that respect it mirrors the music. And again this is a song which there's no real direct comparison to. It's rare to find someone who's found a unique position in a band who operate with guitars, drums, bass, vocals and the usual fare, but somehow these guys have done it. The whole package is unusual and it's impossible to predict how the world, or the small portion of the world that get to hear it, will react. At the very least you have to take your hat of to both music and film for being a welcome diversion.
