Waterstrider - Redwood

Single review by soul1@thesoundofconfusion.com

Now, I know California's a big place and all that, so there are a lot of people there. However, much like Brooklyn and Portland, Oregon, it seems that in order to be allowed to live in the state you have to be able to prove that you're a member of a band. There can't be any other explanation for the sheer quantity of music that The Golden State throws our way. Half of it is utter tosh, but that's not really the point. Waterstrider aren't just a few people who've cobbled together some songs to pass their citizen test though; the genesis of the band goes back to 2009, and after a little reshuffling and trial and error, they're now a quintet and are currently at work on a debut album which, fingers crossed, we'll be hearing sometime this year.

Before that there's the small matter of new single 'Redwood'. It's probably no coincidence that in California you will find Redwood Valley, Redwood Shores and Redwood City - not to mention a whole load of Redwood trees. When you factor in lyrics about earthquakes then you have to assume they're singing about the land in which they live. They do so by mixing what could have been a reasonably normal indie-rock song with a lot more complexity and some more exotic rhythms. 'Redwood' oozes invention and manages to strain to reach beyond the norm without you even realising. You don't just knock together a track like this on an acoustic guitar in fifteen minutes, you work at it until it sounds so natural that it's difficult to believe it didn't just appear out of thin air. Very promising indeed.
