Hookworms - The Correspondent

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Should you happen to follow the Sonic Cathedral record label on either Twitter or Facebook, you will have noticed that, aside from a few posts about the new My Bloody Valentine album, they haven't stopped trying to drum into our heads just how monumentally great their forthcoming 'Psych For Sore Eyes' EP is. It's been designed by Heretic and is a bit of a 3D extravaganza, we've included a picture of the whole set below, the cover image doesn't really do it justice. Because of the demand that their relentless and totally unashamed plugging has created, Sonic Cathedral have now sold out of the vinyl. And it's not even released until February 18th. A couple of independent record stores have a few copies left, links below.

The EP, as you'll probably know by now, has been mixed by Sonic Boom and going off The Band In Heaven's 'High Low' which we recently covered, he's done a grand job. There are six tracks in all and the opener is 'The Correspondent' by Hookworms and again it makes the gimmick, sorry, artistic, side of things seem less relevant. This is a wonderfully drudgy piece of psychedelic drone-rock with a screaming chorus and plenty of splendid reverberation encasing the whole thing. Even if you don't pick up the deluxe packaging that's designed to confuse colourblind people everywhere, the download at least has surely got to be a must.
