Fins - Lawnmower EP

EP review by KevW

This Connecticut bunch only formed at the start of the year and this rawness and freshness is an asset to their sound. Fins are not here to mess about and their debut EP (available on 7" or download) doesn't pull any punches, it grabs you by the throat and shakes you into submission. Their music is pure punk fury that merges the simple three-chord, crash-bang-wallop of the late 70s boom with the ferocity and modern edge of current luminaries such as Future Of The Left. If it's diversity you're after then you're barking up the wrong tree. These guys have one sound and they stick to it rigidly on these four tracks. Maybe subsequent releases will see them branch out and experiment more, but 'Lawnmower' is all about raw power and vitality, something they have in spades.

'Foxfire' blasts off with a riff courtesy of 1977 and then proceeds to rip through Black Flag's instruction manual at full pelt, taking no prisoners along the way. It's feral and ferocious yet they're only just getting started. The screaming title-track is organised chaos that somehow manages to pull melody out of the apparent disorder, it's probably the aural equivalent of being minced by a lawnmower. Both 'Hags' and 'Hold' are made of the same stuff and are aiming to induce severe tinnitus, or at the very least a mild headache. You suspect that far more damage would be done seeing these guys live. It's squalling melees like this that mosh pits were made for. If you venture to one of their gigs and don't make it out the other side, then don't say we didn't warn you.
