Lowlakes - Cold Company

Single review by KevW

You can't get much more middle-of-nowhere than Alice Springs, positioned slap bang in the centre of Australia's vast expanses, it's not known (at least in the UK) for its musical heritage. It took a move south to the coastal city of Melbourne and the addition of guitarist Brent Monaghan for childhood friends Thomas Snowdon, Bill Guerin and Jack Talbot to put together Lowlakes, and an acclaimed EP later they could be on the verge of a breakthrough of sorts. Following their debut release earlier this year, the guys picked up enough coverage to be invited to this month's CMJ Music Festival in New York and the chance to showcase their material to crowds at one of the world's major alternative music hotspots, and to coincide with this they've dropped a new single, 'Cold Company'.

This song is the first fruits of the recording sessions for their debut album, set for a release early next year, and as songs go, this is hugely encouraging and likely to stir up no small amount of anticipation and excitement. 'Cold Company' is a distant cousin of Wild Beasts with its affected vocals and spooky guitarscapes, yet Lowlakes have more of a dreampop element to their sound, conjuring up a strange atmosphere that's at the same time warm and inviting and mysterious and forbidding. It's immaculately put together with great use of percussion and guitars that do no more than they need. Essential built from several simple layers, the overall effect is a soft and shimmering wall of sound. We're not sticking our nexts out too much by predicting that CMJ is in for a real treat.
