Coves - Cast A Shadow EP

EP review by KevW

If you can count Echo & The Bunnymen as fans then the chances are you're probably going to be a fairly decent proposition. First unveiling themselves to the world with a free download EP via bandcamp last summer, Coves have already been hand-picked by the post-punk legends as support for a European tour. It's not a bad way to kick-start your career, and the duo's debut release 'Cast No Shadow EP' goes some way to proving Mac and the lads still have good taste. There's an incredibly fresh sounding mix of electro-rock, psychedelia, shoegaze and post-punk to be found here, and the EP contains three brand new tracks as well as a rerecording of 'No Ladder', out as a single this week. It's a trippy track that fuses 60s California and 90s Bristol together as if they were designed to compliment each other. It seems fitting that new psych heroes TOY have provided a remix.

There's much more to Coves than that though, with 'Run With Me' sounding like The Raveonettes with added soul. If Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra had been born 40 years later then 'Some Velvet Morning' may have shared a similar vibe. 'Fall Out Of Love' is heavy on the twangy guitars and pulse-like beats; these are songs with depth, not merely a nice tune or interesting production, and it's not a big shock that their talent was spotted quickly. The title-track sticks out the most though, maintaining a retro feel but with the tang of modern psych and art-rock added to it, all making for a hugely admirable cocktail of sounds. There's substance about Coves that's instantly apparent, there's also a good chance that a few people will find a new favourite band here. If their development continues like this then we might as well start pencilling them in as 2013's most promising new act.
