Band To Check Out: The Burning Of Rome

Article by KevW

There's a reasonable chance that followers of California's vibrant alternative music scene will be well aware of the work of The Burning Of Rome, we'll admit to being a little slow on the uptake here. If, like us, they're a new name to you then here's a brief introduction to a band worth getting a bit excited about. With two albums already available, we'd suggest beginning in the here and now and then backtracking for further investigation, as third offering 'With Us' is a current going concern. Already available in the States, us Brits will have to wait until early next year to get our mitts on it (or hunt down a cheeky import) but it looks set to be a lively and eclectic explosion of sound, with The Burning Of Rome being a band who use influences from many corners of the musical world to create something distinctively their own.

Their self-description of "death-pop" is quite vague and a little off the mark. We'd suggest a modern form of psychedelia that incorporates elements of punk, pop and whatever else takes their fancy. There doesn't seem to be a magic formula, it's more a case of what sounds good goes, and that's how music making should be. To whet your appetite for more you can pick up the colourful psych-pop nugget 'Ballad Of An Onion Sprout' for free and hear its mix of bells, pop melodies, organ and much much more. It's a perfect summation of the willfully eclectic and heaps of fun approach that the band take to putting tunes together. There's also a compilation of studio clips where you can see and hear them working their magic and get a glimpse of the wide array of sounds and instruments that make up their kaleidoscopic musical cocktail.
