Intervals - Water

Single review by KevW

According to their bio, the seeds for Intervals were sown in Oxford some eleven years ago when they were called The Black Sand. Although they missed our radar, they were picked up by 6 Music amongst others and began to make a bit of headway. Now relocated to Camden the quartet have decided upon a fresh start in a new location and a new sound. With their debut single as Intervals due on October 14th, they cite Wild Beasts, Radiohead and The Maccabees as influences, and if we were listening to this track blindly and were asked to provide a list of bands they could be filed alongside it would most likely include the same trio, with the possible addition of the spaciousness that Foals managed to generate on 'Total Life Forever'.

Beings sons of the city of the dreaming spires it's perhaps unsurprising that a little of Oxford's recent musical history has rubbed off on them, and having been in the game a while it's also unsurprising they want to push themselves and create a sound that avoids the generic guitar band trap so many aspiring rock stars fall in to. Over five minutes, 'Water' weaves its way through expansive guitar sounds, falsetto vocals and into a the occasional hail of crashing drums. Creating a mood seems to be the idea and that's exactly what they do through steady build after steady build, it's an approach that gives the song a smouldering character and a powerful yet slow impact, more like the unstoppable rising tide than a flood deluge, 'Water' is quietly impressive.
